WHAT IS OUR ADVOCACY?
PURECOLOGY'S ADVOCACY
Sanitary pads nowadays can be harmful to human health and the environment. One sanitary pad can take 500 to 800 years to decompose. Hence, the use of disposable sanitary pads contributes to plastic pollution significantly, which is one of the world's most serious problems today. Also, super-absorbent polymers (SAP), which do not decompose, are found in most sanitary pads used by women of all socioeconomic classes. They degrade over time into microplastics, which contaminate soil, water, and the atmosphere. They also get into the food chain and inject toxins into the food that humans and animals eat. Additionally, sanitary products also have negative effects when it comes to reproductive health. The plastic traps moisture and heat, creating an environment that yeast and bacteria thrive in. It can also cause burning, chafing, and soreness in sensitive individuals. With prolonged exposure to the cellulose gel that makes up the bulk of the absorbent material, cervical cancer can develop. The chemical makeup of the plastics used in the pads has the potential to cause embryonic damage and development to women. With the help of Babe in Bloom, Purecology aims to reduce the contribution of sanitary pads to pollution and address the need for sustainable and eco-friendly products. It is far from harming the reproductive health of women and the environment due to its high level of benefits. Additionally, it will be helpful for the farmers whose livelihood was affected by the pandemic.
